Accelerating Cervical Cancer Elimination in Canada: ACE Canada

In 2018, the WHO named the elimination of cervical cancer as one of its top health priorities. Despite being entirely preventable, cervical cancer is named as one the gravest threats to women - an estimated 1,350 Canadian women will be diagnosed and every day, a woman in Canada will die from this preventable cancer. Urgent action is needed to accelerate the pace to achieve elimination of cervical cancer in Canada.

In June 2019, the Canadian Federal Minister of Health allocated a $10 million dollar grant to the Global HPV Control team, led by Dr. Gina Ogilvie. The team is honored to lead Accelerating Cervical Cancer Elimination in Canada (ACE-Canada), a program of research that will examine interventions to improve coverage and reach of primary and secondary prevention of cervical cancer, particularly for underserved and under-screened women. Findings will be relevant for policy makers in BC, Canada, and will inform WHO and other HIC and LMIC partners in their journey to elimination.

ACE Projects

  • ACE SECURE (Self-Collection for Use for Cervical Cancer Screening) assesses feasibility, suitability, and implementation of HPV self-collection. This study considers the role of income, culture, geography, education, and gender in screening and implementation. This project is being executed in collaboration with the BC Cancer Cervix Screening Program.

    Coordinator:

  • The QUEST ADVANCE (Quadrivalent HPV Vaccine Evaluation Study with Addition of the Nonavalent Vaccine) furthers the original QUEST study by examining the requirement and effectiveness of HPV vaccine schedules at greater than 10 years. The project is in collaboration with the team at the Vaccine Evaluation Center.

  • This study aims to improve access to and understanding of the uptake of the HPV vaccine by considering the role of parents, guardians, income, culture, geography, education, and gender.

  • We have partnered with CPAC to leverage existing working groups and partnerships to develop a network to ensure that best practices and learnings from the ACE research program are translated nationally through knowledge sharing and dissemination efforts.
